poem for Mephibosheth
This is the poem that I wrote on our mens' retreat last weekend. The passage that I chose was 2 Sam 9, which details David's attempts to find someone to minister to, someone to show God's love or 'hesed' to. He finds Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son and brings him into the palace, gives him land and has him eat at David's table. Basically, Mephibosheth was being treated as one of David's advisors.
But when looking at the passage again, I found myself in Mephibosheth's shoes. Like him, I was an outcast before Jesus found me. I have no part of God's Kingdom and no meal at His table unless I am invited there by the king. THis poem is my attempt to put myself in the place of Mephibosheth.
I am Mephibosheth
Lame in my feet because of sin
I cannot be at your table
Sharing your bread and wine
Yet You call to me
Bringing lovingkindness to one who does not deserve it
You prepare a banquet for me
And invite me to eat with you forever
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me
How can I repay? How can I respond?
It is for me to respond to your call
Everyday eating bread at your table
My heart rests in you daily
It is You and You only who brings bread that has life
Keep me close to your heart
Don't let me get hungry for other bread
Bread that tastes good for a moment but does not fill
Let me hunger daily for your table
May I be confident in Your Bread's Goodness
May I see Your Face daily
And be filled with hunger for only You.
